I will explain here, with the aid of WoWWiki.com, what goes on in a monster's mind and why all of the sudden he will start attacking other people than the tank, while in an instance.
So. Here goes.
- Healers. If you want to heal the tank, or do any healing at all, do it from far away. Do not stand near the tank (and therefor the mobs) because healing aggroes and you are bound to pull at least one of the multiple monsters attacking the tank to your own special person. If you happen to do that and die, and there's no backup healer, the instance is on its way to a total wipeout (meaning DEATH).
- DPS. DPS means Damage Per Second and is a term used when referring to damage makers. These can include Rogues, Feral Druids, Warlocks, etc etc, anyone that has a very high damage. DPS can get the monster angry (or aggro) if they hit higher than the tank, thus representing a higher threat to the monster.
- Secondary tanks. When a secondary tank (lower level tank usually) decides to be brave and charges into the group of mobs, you know you're in for a ride. Be extremely careful about his or her ego and do not party people that want to be heroes when they don't have the proper armor.
- Last, one thing is to be remembered about aggro and the main tank:
A tank is used to make all the creeps around him concentrate all their damage on him. It makes healing a lot easier for the group healer and, all in all, it is a good idea to have a proper tank to take all the damage when you go to instances.
Now, the problem comes in when:
- The tank is trying to pull spellcasters. If that spellcaster has melee units near it, the melee units will run after the tank. Creeps that haven't been hit once by the tank will aggro to the party member who starts building threat on them. If no dps will hit them, they will aggro to the healers. Healing, as we all know, generates threat. If the tank does not pull and gain threat on each mob, those that will remain un-aggroed will stick themselves to the healers or to users of aoe damage on the primary targets. (thanks for the reminder, Tj).
- One of the party members decides to attack a creep that has not been marked as attackable yet. He will get attacked back and will most likely spell doom for at least himself and the party (if the tank doesn't pull that mob away from him)
